Demi Lovato's neck tattoo means so much more to her than you think.

The "Sorry Not Sorry" star debuted some powerful new ink on the day before Christmas, an illustration of an angel being lifted by three doves as her wings fade away. At the time, her tattoo artist Alessandro Capozzi described the artwork as symbolizing a "rebirth of the spirit." Now, Lovato has taken to social media to explain the message behind the ink, and what it means for her spiritual journey.

“I recently went dark on social media in preparation for my Grammy and Super Bowl performances but while I was off socials I got this incredibly meaningful tattoo done by @alessandro_capozzi,” the 27-year-old musician captioned a set of photos of the design and of her getting buzzed in the tattoo chair.

“Getting tatted by him was an experience I’ve never had before.. no idea what I was going to get done, I told him about my life and where I was at in that moment and we created a combination on images that best symbolized the spiritual awakening I was having," Lovato continued. “Having a fallen angel being lifted by 3, pure, angelic doves (the Holy trinity) as her inner light is being guided by a higher consciousness, and the disintegration of her dark wings was representing the darkness I was shedding."

Prior to her angelic body ink, Lovato also got another uplifting tattoo in December, one of the word "Survivor" scrawled on her neck.

As fans know, the Grammy-nominated singer started her spiritual journey after being baptized in the Jordan River in October. Of the experience, Lovato wrote: “Spirituality is so important to me…to be baptized in the Jordan river – the same place Jesus was baptized – I’ve never felt more renewed in my life.”
