Tejano Gold Countdown is set to pay tribute this weekend to one of Tejano music’s most beloved and influential figures — Laura Canales, affectionately known as La Reina de la Onda Tejana — as the Tejano community remembers her 20 years after her untimely passing.

The show shared a heartfelt message on social media, stating, “We remember her with her music and one of her unforgettable conversations.” Fans can tune in to hear special segments celebrating Canales’ legacy, featuring her timeless hits and an archived interview that captures her warmth, charisma, and passion for Tejano music.

Laura Canales was a trailblazing artist who broke through the male-dominated Tejano scene in the 1970s and 1980s, earning numerous accolades and setting the stage for future generations of female performers. With hits like “Sí Viví Contigo,” “Dame La Mano,” and “Cuatro Caminos,” Canales became a household name and a symbol of empowerment in the Tejano community.

Born in Kingsville, Texas, Canales began her music career as a teenager and rose to fame as the lead vocalist for several groups before launching a successful solo career. She earned multiple Tejano Music Awards and was inducted into the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame, cementing her place as a true icon of the genre.

Tragically, while attending graduate school in 2005, Laura began experiencing issues with her gall bladder. After undergoing routine gall bladder surgery, she developed pneumonia and passed away suddenly on April 16, 2005, at the age of 50. Her death shocked and saddened the Tejano music world, but her influence has never waned.

Twenty years later, her voice, strength, and spirit continue to resonate. This weekend’s tribute by Tejano Gold Countdown, with host Rudy Treviño, is a chance for fans old and new to celebrate the enduring legacy of La Reina de la Onda and discover the 20 biggest Tejano hits of the week.
