Netflix is set to bring the story of the Queen of Cumbia to fans around the world with the global release of Selena y Los Dinos, a powerful new documentary about Selena Quintanilla-Perez and her iconic family band. Directed by Isabel Castro, the film will be available to stream later this winter, marking a major moment for Tejano music lovers and Selena fans everywhere.

The announcement follows an exclusive report from Deadline, which confirmed that Netflix finalized a $6M to $7M deal to acquire the film—an unusually high figure for a documentary and a reflection of Selena’s enduring influence. The film made waves at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling. It went on to win Audience Awards at both SXSW and the Miami Film Festival, further cementing its place as a must-see cinematic celebration of Selena’s life.

Selena y Los Dinos became so popular that when Sundance put it on its portal for industry to watch, the film had to be taken down so quickly because fervent fans were getting hold of clips and posting them,” reported Mike Fleming, Jr., Deadline’s Editor-in-Chief of Film.

The documentary charts the incredible rise of Selena and her family band—from humble beginnings performing at quinceañeras to headlining sold-out stadiums. With never-before-seen footage from the Quintanilla family’s personal archives and intimate interviews, Selena y Los Dinos offers a rare and deeply personal look at the woman behind the music.

“We are so excited to finally share that our documentary Selena y Los Dinos is coming to Netflix! Grateful to have a platform that helps bring Selena’s story to fans around the world,” said Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister and executive producer of the documentary said in a statement to Deadline.

Director Isabel Castro added, “It is an absolute honor to partner with Netflix, who will bring Selena y Los Dinos to a worldwide audience. Selena’s legacy is so meaningful and continues to inspire millions. As a filmmaker, I wanted to honor her extraordinary rise and enduring legacy, while also giving a window into her life behind the stage.”

Selena was tragically murdered in 1995 at just 23 years old, but her legacy lives on through her music and the impact she left on generations. This documentary offers a powerful opportunity to introduce her story to new fans while reigniting the deep admiration of those who have cherished her for decades.

In addition to Suzette Quintanilla, executive producers include AB Quintanilla III and Michele Anthony. The film is produced by Polygram EntertainmentAmsi Entertainment, and Motto Pictures, with Julie GoldmanChristopher ClementsJ. Daniel TorresDavid Blackman, and Simran Singh also producing.
