Earlier this month marked a new chapter in the musical journey of Marlissa Vela, as she officially stepped back into the Tejano music spotlight after years of quiet determination and deeply personal growth.
The daughter of the late Tejano legend Ruben Vela, Marlissa is no stranger to the stage. From her first surprise performance opening for her father in 1997 in Santa Rosa, Texas, to appearances at the San Antonio Tejano Conjunto Festival, Tejano Music Awards, and Vegas Tejano Takeover, Marlissa has earned her stripes as a powerhouse vocalist with a legacy to honor—and a voice all her own.

But her latest project is unlike anything she’s done before.
Her forthcoming album, a heartfelt tribute to her father, has been three years in the making. What began as a passion project to celebrate Ruben Vela’s iconic contributions to Conjunto music quickly became a deeply emotional journey—one that tested her spirit, but also reignited her purpose.
“There were times I didn’t think I’d finish,” Marlissa shared. “Life threw more than a few setbacks my way—personal struggles, delays in production, and the heartbreaking loss of one of my own bandmates. He was so young. That kind of blow just takes the wind out of you.”
Still, it was the unwavering love of her father’s fans—and her own—and the enduring spirit of Ruben Vela himself that kept her going. “Every time I wanted to give up, I thought of my dad and the joy his music brought people. That’s what gave me the strength to keep moving forward.”
Now, with the album nearly complete and the finish line in sight, Marlissa is ready to share a preview of what’s to come.
Her latest single, “La Parrandera,” released this month, is a vibrant, up-tempo reimagining of one of her father’s classic cumbias. It’s the second single from the upcoming tribute album, and a perfect example of how Marlissa blends tradition with originality. “I wanted to keep the spirit of the original alive—the energy, the fun—but still make it mine,” she says

Signed to CHR Records since 2018, Marlissa has built a strong partnership with longtime producer and CHR CEO Rick Garcia, who has helped shape this project with both reverence and innovation. Her previous single, “Viéndolo Bien,” released in late 2024, charted on both Tejano and Conjunto playlists, signaling that fans are ready—and eager—for her return.
As she steps back into the Tejano media scene, Marlissa does so with gratitude, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose. “This album is more than just music to me,” she says. “It’s a tribute, it’s healing, and it’s a way to say thank you—to my dad, to the fans, and to everyone who’s believed in me. I can’t wait for the world to hear it.”
Marlissa Vela’s journey is far from over—but with her new music, her heart on her sleeve, and the memory of her father guiding the way, it’s clear she’s exactly where she’s meant to be.
