The unmistakable voice and spirit of Teddy Martinez live on in Hasta La Próxima, the newly released and final album from Teddy Martinez y Grupo Oro. This posthumous project is more than just a collection of songs — it’s a heartfelt farewell from one of Tejano’s most passionate and beloved artists. Martinez passed away unexpectedly in June 2024 at the age of 52, almost a year before the album’s completion.
Hasta La Próxima was co-produced by Martinez alongside Sinuhe Aussenac and Grammy-winning producer Ernie Gonzales. The project took shape in two musically rich cities — Reel Tracks Studio in San Antonio, Texas, and the iconic Blackbird Studio in Nashville, Tennessee — bringing together a dynamic mix of talent from both regions.
The result is a bold, emotional, and sonically rich album that seamlessly blends the traditional sound of Tejano with Nashville’s polished musicianship. From energetic cumbias and modern rancheras to deeply personal ballads, the album showcases Teddy’s wide-ranging musical vision and unwavering dedication to his craft.
“Tejano music has deep roots, but it’s also evolving,” said Gonzales. “Working with musicians from both San Antonio and Nashville gave this project a special kind of soul.”
Gonzales, a longtime friend and collaborator of Martinez, shared how deeply personal the project became after Teddy’s sudden passing. “This is one of the hardest albums I’ve ever had to do,” he said. “We had plans to meet in Nashville to finish mixing and add a few more things. Just a few days before he passed, we were still working. I never imagined that would be our last conversation.”
A gifted songwriter as well as a performer, Martinez left behind a deeply personal songbook. Hasta La Próxima includes standout tracks like “Eres Toda Mi Vida,” a Grupo Oro classic co-written with David Puente, and “Ama y Apa,” a moving cumbia tribute to his parents written solely by Martinez. The album also features writing and performances by Tejano luminaries such as two-time Grammy winner Juan Treviño, Dimas García, and René Zapata.
