SAN BENITO, TX — Mike Gonzalez and The Iconiczz were forced to cancel their Rio Grande Valley scheduled performance at The Soul of South Texas Summer Concert Series in San Benito on Saturday night (July 19) due to a sudden health scare involving the band’s leader, Mike Gonzalez.
Gonzalez took to social media with a video message, sharing a photo showing his arm with an IV. In the video, the Tejano musician detailed the seriousness of his condition and explained why he couldn’t make the trip to San Benito.
“In all of the 20 years that I spent sharing the stage with Mr. Jimmy G and all of the years that I’ve done running The Iconiczz, not once have I ever asked for a day off,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve played through colds, flus, fevers… you just had to do the thing. But yesterday, I had a very, very close call health-wise, and my doctor ordered that I not travel and get some rest.”
While he didn’t disclose specific details about the health scare, Gonzalez emphasized that it was serious enough to stop him from performing — something he says has never happened in his long music career.
Gonzalez offered heartfelt thanks to promoter Roy Garcia and award-winning Conjunto band The Homeboyz, who stepped in last-minute to fill the spot left by The Iconiczz. “Thank you, my brothers. I love you guys,” Gonzalez said.
He also extended his sincerest apologies to the people of San Benito and the entire 956 region. “We will see you all soon. I promise,” he said. “When your body tells you that’s enough, that’s enough. You have no say so in that.”
Mike Gonzalez spent two decades on stage with his late father, the legendary Jimmy Gonzalez Y Grupo Mazz, until Jimmy G’s passing in 2018. He later formed The Iconiczz to honor his father’s legacy and has carried on the family’s musical tradition with the signature sound.
Recently, Mike Gonzalez and The Iconiczz signed with the legendary Tejano label Freddie Records, the same label that helped catapult Jimmy Gonzalez Y Grupo Mazz to Grammy and Latin Grammy wins. The group is currently working on their highly anticipated follow-up album to their 2022 debut, Te Llevo En Mi Alma. That album earned The Iconiczz recognition at the 43rd Tejano Music Awards, taking home Best New Group and Best New Female Artist for powerhouse vocalist Di Mare.
As Gonzalez recovers, fans across Texas and beyond are sending their well wishes and hoping for his swift return to the stage. One thing is certain — when he’s ready, the 956 will be waiting.
