Grupo Control, known by fans as “Los Reyes de la Cumbia,” has released an official statement addressing recent legal actions aimed at protecting the authenticity and legacy of their brand. In a post shared across the band’s social media, the Rio Grande Valley-based group outlined the reasons behind their decision to pursue legal measures against unauthorized use of their name and trademarks.
“Since the founding of Grupo Control, Sergio Degollado has been the only financial investor and has taken on the complete responsibility of building this musical legacy,” the statement reads. “Every resource gained has been reinvested into the project—from personal savings and home mortgages to commercial loans—totaling more than $7.9 million in brand development over more than two decades.”
Grupo Control clarified that the federally registered trademarks “GRUPO CONTROL” and “CONTROL” have been infringed upon by former partners and promoters, prompting the legal action. According to the statement, numerous private attempts to resolve the issue were made in good faith but ultimately proved unsuccessful.
“Our sole intention is to defend the authenticity and integrity of the Grupo Control brand that our fans have supported for 25 years,” the band stated. “This is fundamentally a commercial matter involving trademark protection, not a personal dispute.”
Management emphasized that the group remains committed to transparency, their loyal fanbase, and preserving the genuine Grupo Control experience at all future performances. “We look forward to continuing to serve our community with authentic Group Control presentations,” they concluded.
The announcement comes at a pivotal time for Grupo Control, as the band celebrates a major milestone in 2025—the 25th anniversary of their debut album, Cumbias Sin Control. To mark the occasion, the band is working on a special album featuring both new music and updated versions of their most iconic hits.
Founded in the Rio Grande Valley by brothers Sergio and José Degollado, Grupo Control made their debut in December 1999 with Cumbias Sin Control, a groundbreaking release that introduced their energetic fusion of cumbia and regional Mexican music. Over the years, they have become a staple in the genre with crowd favorites like “Cumbia Con La Luna,” “El Tao Tao,” and “Se Tambalea.” Their vibrant sound and electric live shows have earned them a devoted following across the U.S. and Latin America.
As Grupo Control looks ahead to the next chapter, they do so with the firm intention of honoring their legacy and continuing to deliver the music that has made them legends in the Música Mexicana and cumbia scenes.
