Miami, FL — The powerful new documentary Take It Away: The Rise and Fall of Tejano Hollywood has been awarded Best Documentary at the Nvision Latino Film & Music Festival in Miami, Florida. The moving film chronicles the legendary career of Johnny Canales, the beloved television host whose groundbreaking show helped bring Tejano music to audiences across the nation.

Directed by Adrian Arredondo and Myrna Perez, the feature film selection is a heartfelt tribute to Canales’ remarkable journey — from his humble beginnings to his rise as a charismatic TV host who introduced the world to countless Tejano and Regional Mexican stars. Through vintage footage, emotional interviews, and heartfelt memories, the documentary celebrates the man behind the iconic phrase, “You got it, take it away!”
The film, which premiered earlier this year at film festivals in Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, to a packed and emotional audience, was executive produced by Texas Monthly and Trojan Horse Media. Director Adrian Arredondo attended the Miami screening along with Nora Canales, Johnny’s wife, and their daughters Miroslava and Zelestial, who continue to honor his enduring legacy.
Festival audiences warmly received the film’s intimate portrayal of Canales, with many praising its blend of nostalgia and cultural importance. Take It Away shines a spotlight on how The Johnny Canales Show became a launchpad for generations of Tejano talent, solidifying his place as one of the most influential figures in Latino entertainment.
Founded in 2015 by acclaimed filmmaker and photographer Danny Hastings, the Nvision Latino Film & Music Festival has become a premier platform celebrating the diversity and creativity of Latino filmmakers and artists in the United States.
Take It Away: The Rise and Fall of Tejano Hollywood is expected to continue its festival run, with a screening scheduled for McAllen, Texas, in December.
