Tejano music legend Ram Herrera revealed to fans late Monday night that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, sharing the deeply personal news in a heartfelt video posted to social media.
“I want to talk to you a little bit about something very personal to me. I’ve been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the prostate. It is treatable from what I understand,” Herrera said. “It is a scary situation, but it is treatable. I know through the power of prayer and other prayers… I’m going to see it through and through the power of Christ, I’m going to see it through.”
Herrera expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has already received from fans, promoters, and club owners, and emphasized that his faith and medical team are giving him strength. He also urged men over 50 to get screened for prostate and colon cancer.
“I urge you guys that are like between 40 and 50, 60 years old, I would say about 50 years old, go get screened,” he said. “It’s amazing what they can do now.”
The 65-year-old singer explained that his treatment will involve radiation therapy and medication but not chemotherapy. He acknowledged that lifestyle changes will be necessary, including diet adjustments, but remains optimistic.
This summer, Herrera celebrated 45 years in the Tejano music industry and in June, he married his wife, whom he credited as a great source of strength and support. The singer previously faced serious health challenges in 2017, when a knee infection led to a collapsed lung and heart problems.
Herrera’s music journey spans more than four decades, beginning in the early 1980s as a powerhouse vocalist for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales before launching his solo career. His 1986 gold-certified debut album Most Wanted Man and 1989 release The Outlaw cemented his reputation as a leading force in Tejano music, introducing his band The Outlaws.
Throughout his career, Herrera has earned Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, multiple Tejano Music Awards—including Male Entertainer of the Year—and is celebrated for his chart-topping hits and soulful voice. More recently, he has embraced gospel music, using his talents to share messages of faith and hope.
As he enters this new chapter, Ram Herrera remains committed to music, faith, and life. “I want to keep on singing. I want to still be around. I got a lot of life left,” he told fans.
