In an attempt to gain early release, inmates at an LA County detention center tried to infect themselves with COVID-19 by sharing water bottles and face masks with each other.
As a result, 30 inmates got infected with the coronavirus and two of those inmates were released.
“There was some mistaken belief among the inmate population that if they tested positive that there was a way to force our hand and somehow release more inmates out of our jail environment—and that’s not gonna happen,"
Said the County Sheriff.
Shortly after the release of two inmates, video footage was uncovered showing inmates passing around one water bottle and breathing through one mask.
