The long-awaited definitive documentary about Selena Quintanilla-Pérez — the Queen of Tejano Music and one of the most beloved cultural icons of all time — is finally here. Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy premiered today (Nov. 17) on Netflix, giving fans across the world an unprecedented, deeply personal look at Selena’s life, artistry, and family roots.
For generations of fans who grew up singing every lyric, quoting her movie, and watching today’s biggest artists openly credit Selena as their inspiration, this documentary is the moment they’ve been waiting for.
Directed by Isabel Castro (Mija, Darlin) and executive-produced by Michele Anthony, Suzette Quintanilla, and A.B. Quintanilla III, the film traces the Quintanilla family’s journey from modest beginnings — performing in their Lake Jackson Tex-Mex restaurant and playing quinceañeras — to selling out stadiums as one of the most influential musical groups of their era.
A Never-Before-Seen Side of Selena
The documentary is built around rare, never-before-seen footage from the Quintanilla family’s personal archive. Fans will witness Selena as they’ve never seen her: laughing in home videos, sharing tender moments with her family, creating music alongside her siblings, and embracing life as a daughter, sister, and wife.

“As a filmmaker, I wanted to honor her extraordinary rise and enduring legacy, while also giving a window into her life behind the stage,” says director Isabel Castro. “Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before… I can’t wait for a global audience to experience the magic, heart, and community that Selena gave to all of us.”
A Story Told by Those Who Lived It
Selena y Los Dinos is anchored by the voices of those who knew her best: parents Marcella and Abraham, siblings Suzette and A.B., husband Chris Pérez, and the bandmates who helped fuel her meteoric rise. Together, they recount how the family navigated identity, ambition, sacrifice, and love while redefining the Tejano genre.

“We are Latinos ni de aqua, ni de allá,” Suzette Quintanilla tells Tudum. “And hopefully somebody watching [this documentary] who might know nothing about us can identify with that feeling — of not being from here nor from there.”
Director Castro echoes the sentiment. “Yes, it is about pride and about being Latino in the United States,” she says, “but it’s also universal… it’s about people merging two worlds. Selena is for them.”
Honoring Selena’s Legacy — Through Music, Family, and Truth
The film does not shy away from reflecting on Selena’s tragic death, as Suzette and Castro discuss its aftermath and the enduring glow of her legacy. It’s a celebration of the superstar’s joy, talent, and cultural impact — and the family that shaped the legend behind the microphone.
Selena y Los Dinos premiered earlier this year at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Archival Storytelling — a testament to its emotional depth and exquisite preservation of history.
Executive producer Suzette Quintanilla says bringing this documentary to Netflix is a dream finally realized. “We are so excited to finally share that our documentary Selena y Los Dinos is coming to Netflix! Grateful to have a platform that helps bring Selena’s story to fans around the world.”
But for Suzette, this project is personal in ways fans may not expect.
“It’s actually all of us in there, talking about our journey,” she says. “I know everybody’s like, ‘Oh, another Selena thing.’ No — what’s really cool about this documentary is that we’re actually talking about the making of songs, how some band members joined our group. Chris is talking. My mom — my mom’s never been interviewed before in her whole life. And this is the first time she actually agreed to do something. It’s amazing. I’m very proud of this documentary. This is my baby.”
